What to expect from a personal trainer (a good first session)

If you have never worked with a trainer, here is what good looks like, so you can tell early whether you are in the right hands.

A good first session is an assessment and a conversation, not a punishment.

The first session

A good trainer starts by understanding you: your history, any injuries, what you have tried, and what you actually want. Expect questions before exercises. You should leave the first session knowing the plan, not just sore.

How a good trainer works over time

What is not normal

Being pushed to the point of injury, shamed about your body, sold supplements you did not ask about, or handed the same generic circuit as everyone else. A trainer works for you. If it feels otherwise, it is fine to leave.

Where FASTER stands: we list qualified trainers and show you the facts. We are not responsible for the service any trainer provides, and the relationship is strictly between you and them. These guides exist so you can make that call well.

Common questions

What happens in a first personal training session?

Usually an assessment and a conversation: your history, goals, any injuries, and a gentle look at how you move, before any hard training. You should leave understanding the plan.

How often should I see a personal trainer?

It depends on your goal and budget. Once a week with homework is common and effective; some train two or three times. Consistency matters more than frequency.
